The following year he joined the All-Russian Extraordinary Commission for Combating Counter-Revolution and Sabotage (Cheka).Artuzov headed the Soviet foreign intelligence service INO, part of OGPU, later the NKVD, from August 1931 to May 1935.He was arrested on May 13, 1937 as part of the "Plot of the Generals."
