He was in private practice of law in Boston, Massachusetts from 1885 to 1903, serving as an instructor at Harvard University from 1886 to 1892, and as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1899 to 1902. He was an associate judge of the Massachusetts Superior Court from 1903 to 1911. On May 25, 1911, Schofield was nominated by President William H. Taft to a seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit vacated by Francis Cabot Lowell. Schofield was confirmed by the United States Senate on June 6, 1911, and received his commission the same day. Schofield served in that position for barely over a year before his death on June 10, 1912."@en }
