The rights to the museum were initially granted to the Hellenic Ministry of Culture by the Ecclesiastical Charity Fund of Astypalaia in 1994. An exhibition was organized from 1995-1996, eventually leading to the opening of the museum in September 1998.The Astypalaia Archaeological Museum is located in a ground-floor hall, and contains artifacts ranging from the prehistoric period down to medieval times. Of particular note are grave offerings from two Mycenaean tombs that were excavated at Armenohori and a miniature bronze Roman statue of Aphrodite, excavated at Trito Marmari.
