They could trace their origins to 1794, when they were raised as the 34th Madras Battalion.Their first action was in the Battle of Nagpore in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War; then the Battle of Kemendine in the First Burmese War. They returned to Burma in 1885, in the Second Burmese War.During World War I they were attached to the 9th (Secunderabad) Division which remained in India, on internal security and training duties.After World War I the Indian government reformed the army moving from single battalion regiments to multi battalion regiments.
