He studies the economics of global environmental protection and energy economics and has written extensively on corporate organization and behavior as it pertains to the use of energy-efficient technologies. His most recent research focuses on the consequences of computational limits for economics and for social theory more generally. After receiving his Ph.D from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1972, he taught at Tufts University and Yale University before joining the faculty at the UCSB in 1978.
