The aircraft involved in the accident was a de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter with registration 9M-MDM.An initial landing attempt on Kudat's runway 04 was aborted due to strong tailwinds. The pilots did a go-around, and repositioned for landing on runway 22. During the approach to runway 22, a sudden gust of wind caused the aircraft to yaw and roll to the right, after which it impacted trees and a house, causing damage to the house' kitchen, toilet, and dining area. The aircraft came to a stop on the ground outside the house, facing towards the runway, with its right wing and landing gear separated from the aircraft.During the accident, one passenger seat separated from the cabin floor, and the passenger occupying this seat sustained a fatal injury. All other persons on board were taken to hospital; the co-pilot succumbed to his injuries on the same day. Two persons who were in the house at the time of the aircraft's impact were uninjured.In July 2015, the Malaysian Ministry of Transport's Air Accident Investigation Bureau published its final report on the incident, in which it noted that the on the approach to runway 22, the “wind condition was still not favourable for landing, and gusting” and “the pilots were not in total control of the aircraft”."@en }
