He served as a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives 1855-1857 and was elected as an Unconditional Unionist to the Thirty-eighth Congress (March 4, 1863 – March 3, 1865). He declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1864. He also served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1864. After leaving Congress, he resumed the practice of law.
