He was born in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland in 1851. His parents were Andrew Scott (Writer to the Signet) and Marion Shaw Lidderdale. He went to secondary school at Edinburgh Institution and graduated from Edinburgh University in 1874 with Bachelor of Medicine and Master of Surgery (M.B. and C.M.). He then went on to take the Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons postgraduate diploma in 1876. and graduated as Doctor of Medicine (M.D.)at Edinburgh in 1877.
