Low left his Hougang seat to his party member Yaw Shin Leong to contest which Yaw managed to retain it, defeating PAP candidate Desmond Choo, making Yaw the Member of Parliament for Hougang ( 2011-2012)On 15 February 2012, Yaw Shin Leong was expelled from the Workers' Party, leaving a vacant seat in Hougang SMC. A by-election was held, with Nomination Day on 16 May 2012 and Polling on 26 May 2012. The Workers Party choose Png Eng Huat as the candidate for Hougang.
