His first master was Seig in Magdeburg, and in 1828 he entered the studio of Carl Joseph Begas in Berlin, and went in 1831 to Düsseldorf, to the atelier of Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow, with whom he remained six years. In company with Heinrich Mücke he completed a number of frescoes for Count Spee in his schloss at Heltorf, and in 1843 he painted a wall in the Rath-haus of Elberfield.
