He was a member of the Crocker Land Expedition with Walter Elmer Ekblaw. He is considered to be a pioneer in modern beekeeping. Tanquary was interested in apiculture and resigned in 1923 to enter professional beekeeping in North Dakota. He later joined the University of Minnesota in apiculture and remained there until 1944.
