It was discovered by Finnish astronomer Yrjö Väisälä at the Turku Observatory in Southwest Finland, on 18 January 1939.The S-type asteroid is a member of the Flora family, one of the largest groups of stony asteroids in the main-belt. It orbits the Sun at a distance of 2.0–2.5 AU once every 3 years and 4 months (1,226 days). Its orbit is tilted by 5 degrees to the plane of the ecliptic and shows an orbital eccentricity of 0.09. It has a well-determined rotation period of 5.32 hours. According to the space-based Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and its subsequent NEOWISE mission, the body's albedo amounts to 0.21 and 0.51, while the Collaborative Asteroid Lightcurve Link assumes an albedo of 0.24, which is a typical value for a silicaceous asteroid.The minor planet is named after Pieksämäki, a eastern Finnish town in Southern Savonia."@en }
