It was discovered on 30 April 1935, by English-born, South African astronomer Cyril Jackson at the Union Observatory in Johannesburg, South Africa.The asteroid is a member of the Hungaria family, that form the innermost dense concentration of asteroids in the Solar System. It orbits the Sun at a distance of 1.8–1.9 AU once every 2 years and 6 months (922 days). Its orbit shows an eccentricity of 0.04 and is significantly tilted by 23 degrees to the plane of the ecliptic.The body's rotation around its own axis has been measured several times at the Palmer Divide Observatory (see video in § External links) with divergent results. A more recent light-curve observation in September 2014 found a rotation period of 2.971 hours significantly shorter than some previous photometric observations. The X-type asteroid has a bright geometric albedo between 0.27 and 0.47. While observations at the Argentinian Lencito Complex in 2007 categorize the asteroid in the metallic M-type class, bodies with an albedo above 0.30 are usually not classified as metallic M-types but rather as E or Xe subtypes.The minor planet was named after Magoeba, a native chief of the North Transvaal in South Africa."@en }
