Although PASKAL was created as a maritime counter-terrorism unit, it has become a multi-functional special operations unit with several roles that include high-risk personnel/hostage extractions, direct action, special reconnaissance operations and other specialised missions.All PASKAL are male members of the Royal Malaysian Navy. It was officially established on 1 October 1980, after a five-year setting-up period, with the purpose of enforcing Malaysia's Exclusive Economic Zone maritime claims through sea, air and land operations. Due to their reputation as one of the Malaysia's premier special operations forces, PASKAL operators routinely serve in allied SOF's including the Indonesia Kopassus, Denjaka, Singapore Naval Diving Unit and Thailand Navy SEALs."@en }
