He married the widowed Ruth Hanna McCormick, also a member of Congress at the time, in 1931. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1930 to the Seventy-second Congress. After leaving Congress, he was member of the Republican National Committee 1932-1934 as well as a banker, farmer, and rancher. He helped found Albuquerque Academy.
