- Sub_surface_chlorophyll_maximum abstract "The Sub surface Chlorophyll Maximum (SCM) is a biological phenomena observed in ocean or lake water. It is an indication of high concentration of phytoplankton. The SCM is also formed due to higher chlorophyll content of phytoplankton living in darker bottom environment of water body. The SCM acts as a nutrient trap, from which the phytoplankton in those region is capable of assimilating nutrient of decaying biomass from bottom. It is permanent phenomena throughout tropical ocean, while in higher latitude region its occurrence is seasonal. The SCM is normally characterized by parameters such as depth of occurrence, thickness of layer of occurrence and intensity of the chlorophyll. These parameters are determined by marine hydrology, nutrient concentrations and species of phytoplankton. An instance of SCM is observed in the Eastern Arabian Sea at depths ~15-50m.. It appeared to be formed at depths by a photosynthetically active phytoplankton community that is adapted to low light intensity. The low nutrient concentration (especially nitrate) and the dissolved oxygen maxima observed in association with most of the SCMs indicate the high rate of photosynthetic activity in the SCM. In the case of deep mixed layers SCM may gradually deepen leaving a zone of nitrate deficient water between it and the upper pycnocline. Therefore, nutrients that might normally be supplied to the surface waters by diffusion and mixing from below are mostly used by photosynthetically active phytoplankton community making up the zone. The presence of such a zone may influence the total column primary production, vertical distribution of nutrients, dissolved oxygen etc.The spatial distribution of chlorophyll in marine region can be retrieved through spectral characteristics embedded in the satellite images of ocean.".
