- Old_Right_(United_States) abstract "The Old Right is a branch of American conservatism that started in a Republican split over Tariffs in 1910 and was most active from then through 1948, by which point they had become 'Conservatives' (around 1936). After unsuccessfully opposing Theodore Roosevelt, Wilson, and the Progressive mandate of 1912, as well as, inconsistently, the Great War of 1914, their philosophy took over the institutions of the Republican Party by 1920 for the most part, and ruled as the dominant party comfortably until their opposition to regulation of the economy (or fixes to it) led to the beginning of the Great Depression in 1929, and strong resistance to economic intervention. Discredited by President Hoover's (a moderate member of these Paleoconservatives) unwillingness to acknowledge the crisis (he and his spokesmen kept predicting a natural return upward to economic equilibrium, and wouldn't acknowledge deaths by starvation and cold), despite his administration's edging toward taking action against the Depression in 1932, the movement was swept away in the election of 1932, with unemployment at 25.2%, as Franklin Roosevelt led the most powerful Congress since 1820 through the 'Hundred Days', a mid-term wave-election, and the dominance of momentary dominance of Liberalism by 1936, as the Depression steadily improved through three wave elections. But opposition to the New Deal had not disappeared and these politicians returned as semi-modern 'Conservatives' by 1938, when they won back enough power to block further New Deal domestic programs of the 1930s effectively, as well as be the voice of skepticism about U.S. involvement of any sort in World War II. After the war, they took away new union rights in 1947, opposed President Truman, but softened on Internationalism, having partly changed from pre-war Isolationists to more modern US conservative 'hawks'. After a contentious fight in the 1948 election, Truman returned the New Deal Coalition firmly to power on a platform of fighting for employment, the economic interests of ordinary people against the business-oriented right, and the legacy of FDR. But the descendants of the Old Right - Paleoconservatives/Conservatives, though dropping isolationism by 1952, when General Eisenhower was drafted to replace Paleoconservative Robert A. Taft as the GOP nominee, would again become a powerful force in US politics in 1968, amid the chaos of the Vietnam War.Many members of this faction were associated with the Republicans of the interwar years led by Robert A. Taft and Herbert Hoover. Some were Democrats. They were called the "Old Right" to distinguish them from their New Right successors, such as Barry Goldwater, who came to prominence in the 1950s and 1960s and favored an interventionist foreign policy to battle international communism. Many members of the Old Right favored laissez-faire classical liberalism; some were business-oriented conservatives; others were ex-radicals who moved sharply to the right, like the novelist John Dos Passos; still others, like the Southern Agrarians, were traditionalists who dreamed of restoring a premodern communal society. The Old Right's devotion to anti-imperialism were at odds with the spreading of progressive culture and global democracy, the top-down transformation of local heritage, social and institutional engineering of the political Left and even some from the modern Right-wing. The "Old Right" was unified by their opposition to what they saw as the danger of domestic dictatorship by President Franklin Roosevelt. Most were unified by their defense of natural inequalities, tradition, limited government, and anti-imperialism, as well as their skepticism of democracy and the growing power of Washington. The Old Right per se has faded as an organized movement, but many similar ideas are found amongst paleoconservatives and paleolibertarians.".
