He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty-six when he joined the Cork senior team for the 1929-30 National Hurling League. Stanton went on to play a bit part for Cork in what has come to be known as one of the greatest teams the county ever produced, and won two All-Ireland medals and two Munster medals as a non-playing substitute, as well as one National Hurling League medal on the field of play.At club level he won two championship medals with St. Finbarr's.Throughout his career Stanton made just 2 championship appearances.
