Lower magnitude events are included if they have caused death, injury or damage. All dates are listed according to UTC time. Two events dominated 1952 in seismic terms. Firstly in March a magnitude 8.1 earthquake struck Japan resulting in a robust aftershock sequence. Then in November a giant magnitude 8.9 earthquake rocked the Kamchatka area of Russia. This event was the largest of the year and also had the unfortunate accolade of being the deadliest. The Kamchatka quake was not only the largest of 1952 but also one of the largest of all time. A staggering 240 magnitude 6.0 - 6.9 quakes were reported. The Kamchatka aftershock sequence contributed in a large way to this number. The number of magnitude 7.0 - 7.9 events was unusually low especially given the previously mentioned megaquakes."@en }
