North Korea produced its first electric locomotives in the 1960s. One of the first models, manufactured in 1968, participated in the restoration of the inter-Korean rail link, for the first time in 57 years, on 17 May 2007. Located in the Seosong district of Pyongyang, the factory bears the name of Kim Jong-tae, a South Korean activist executed in 1969 for belonging to the Revolutionary Party for Reunification. The company, originally called "Kim Jong-tae Economic Power Complex", was renamed under its current name after being restructured in late 1999 and early 2000, as did 40 other major North Korean groups. Following a visit of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il on 5 January 2002, the plant produced a new range of electric locomotives."@en }
