He studied at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in Cape Town where he qualified with a diploma in graphic design. Mkize founded a visual arts and communication company Loyiso Mkize Art. In addition to illustrating comics, he paints with oil paint on canvas and his subjects are generally African, he explores the complex nature that makes up this modern man, his environment, predisposition and culture. He focuses on the emotion, emphasizing brush strokes on skin texture and the eyes. His first solo exhibition, Reflections of Inner Truth, opened on 14 July 2011 at The Framery Art Gallery. His second solo exhibition titled, Pulse, opened on 12 July 2012 at the Avital Lang Gallery in Mouille Point, Cape Town. He was one of a few artists asked to exhibit at the 2012 Art & Life Charity event at the Val de Vie estate in Paarl.
