His family later moved to Croydon, and then Claremont. In February 1895, at the age of 19, he enlisted in the Union Army. He returned to Claremont later that year, where he became a carpenter. He married in 1866. He and his wife later went to Keene, and moved to Gardiner in 1875. There he practiced as a contractor, and became known for the designs he built. In 1883 he received his first architectural commission, a building in Richmond. The following year he opened an architectural office in Gardiner.Lewis practiced until November of 1897, when he was appointed Chief Engineer and General Superintendent of Construction at Togus, probably due to the extensive work he had done there while in private practice. He retired from that position in 1917, and died in 1928."@en }
